Giuggiola: Where Memory Becomes Iconic Design
Second Episode of “Interviste d’Autore” celebrating 60 Years of Calia Italia
Some creations are born from the purest inspiration — one that takes root in cherished memories. Giuggiola is one of them: an icon of contemporary design born from an intertwining of memory, tradition, and innovation.
A University Project That Became Legend
It all began with a collaboration with La Sapienza University of Rome.
“Walking into the classroom and seeing so many students, attentive and engaged with what I was sharing, was an extraordinary emotion for me.”
150 students, 75 projects, and one decision that would change everything: Project N4, featuring a backrest with a tube-shaped, intertwined weave.
From Grandmothers’ Braided Buns to a Design Icon
“A weave that immediately reminded me of women’s braided buns, the kind used to tie up their hair.” The memory of a grandmother being gently styled, her hair braided by a helping hand, becomes the emotional heart of the project. “It filled me with joy. So, I envisioned a beautiful, comfortable, and distinctive chair—one that could enchant me. In Italian, we say ‘essere in un brodo di giuggiole’ to describe a state of pure delight—and that’s how the Giuggiola got its name.”
Here’s how the name evolved: from project N4 into Giuggiola, capturing all the emotion and joy this creation inspires.
The Art of Weaving: Tradition and Craftsmanship
Creating the Giuggiola demands extraordinary artisanal skill. “The woven part of the piece is crafted from twelve strands—each secured with a button on one side and finishing perfectly with matching buttons on the other. The skill and precision of the hands that tie these strands is truly remarkable.
Each Giuggiola is one of a kind: “No Giuggiola is ever the same, because the weave is never completely identical, and always varies. This unique feature makes every chair truly singular, bringing the essence of Italian craftsmanship into every home.”
The Tail: Beauty Meets Function
There’s something delightful about Giuggiola: it features a stunning “tail” that evokes the train of an evening gown—but its role is essentially structural. Giuggiola needs stability, and the tail provides it.
A perfect balance of form and function—where elegance embraces practicality.
An International Family
The success of the Italian Giuggiola gave rise to an entire collection. “From Giuggiola, new chairs were born—and the story is still unfolding. Madame G, Lady G, and Doña G each carry their own identity, inspired by the chair’s ‘attire’ and representing a different country.”
• Lady G: United Kingdom
• Madame G: France
• Doña G: Spain
• Vivì: «a high-backed chair that offers the soul a place to find refuge»
Uncompromising Versatility
“Giuggiola fits anywhere—living room, bedroom, walk-in closet, or even a home library. It always fits. It’s always beautiful.” Its ability to adapt to any environment and harmonize with sofas of different styles makes it a truly democratic and inclusive design piece.
Giuggiola perfectly embodies Calia Italia’s philosophy: the fusion of artisanal tradition, innovative design, and that uniquely Italian talent for transforming emotions into an iconic design that stands the test of time.
